Our Roses

Roses are planted near the vineyard to indicate approaching trouble by pests or disease. Legend has it that roses bring good luck for the harvest. Roses and French grapevines require the same type of constant supervision; therefore roses and wine are a natural combination.

At Laurel Gray, we currently have 70 Jackson Perkins tea roses. Every other row of the vineyard has a different variety with its own unique fragrance. In front of our tasting room/gift shop are two rose gardens consisting of 40 tea roses. Our red barn also has tea roses on each side of the doorway and we have roses in our "cottage" herb garden. Some of the varieties we enjoy are Double Delight (Benny's favorite), Diana Princess of Wales, Barbara Bush, Sultry, Tropical Sunset, Mister Lincoln, Perfectly Red, Sweet Valentine, Fragrant Cloud, Rose Rhapsody, and many more.

The roses are a great delight to everyone in our family. We like to share them with friends who are under the weather or make an arrangement for our church on Sunday morning. They bloom from late May until the first frost usually in mid-October.

While visiting at Laurel Gray we encourage you to take our self guided Wine and Roses Tour. Take your time and enjoy finding each variety of rose and French Vinifera grapevine. Afterwards join us back at the tasting room and we'll talk about our favorites.
